Why you need data centre in your life
In our strive for a greener world, which needs to, and will, mean an energy transition from consumption of energy and products from hydrocarbons to a less polluting form that allows us to keep doing what we need to do – you might think using a data centre as part of your business operations is not very – well … green.
Our data centres, and our partners’ data centres, certainly use a lot of power – Megawatts of the stuff, and as an individual business, you need to have a huge IT demand and compelling business reasons to own and operate your own data centre.
That is why after 25+ years, and a lot of planning, we realised that significant investment was needed to make our legacy data centre meet modern and future standards and it was never going to be enough, so we partnered with a well established provider who is already operating a greener, more efficient and future proofed facility.
This means that our own IT needs are managed to the highest levels and standards – environmentally, technically, securely and operationally.
As importantly and as part of the same plan, all the services we deliver and support for our customers – cloud, colocation, communications, connectivity and cyber security are delivered in the most reliable, secure, sustainable, and future-proofed way.
Looking ahead, for us this is important – and it should be for you too – Gartner says that by 2025, 85% of infrastructure strategies will integrate on-premises, colocation, cloud and edge delivery options, compared with only 20% in 2020.
At the same time, for an average business with up to 10 servers, the total operating costs of doing it yourself or in someone elses data centre will be about the same.
The real rub comes where a purpose built, modern and large-scale data centre will consume power and use power in a much more effective and friendly manner to the environment, as well as providing significant operational benefits in terms of availability and security.
While you probably won't have a data centre strategy, you certainly will have a business plan that increasingly looks at how you can make less of an environmental impact than you are now and that means making more use of data centres like ours – for your business-as-usual plans, your backup and business continuity plans, your growth plans, your cloud plans and for your modern hybrid working plans.
